Be wary of a tax scam text
On Monday, local residents may have received a text stating a “tax refund claim” had been processed and approved by the State of California Franchise Tax Board.
According to the State of California Franchise Tax Board, such communications are only sent to users if they schedule an appointment to visit a field office, register for, login to, or update a MyFTB account, or request text message assistance after calling the Franchise Tax Board at (916) 845-3650. Users can also update their MyFTB account at ftb.ca.gov/myftb to receive additional text notifications.
“If you receive a suspicious or unsolicited text message claiming to be from FTB, do not respond or click on any links, as the text may be a phishing scam,” read tax board’s scam webpage. “FTB does not send text messages asking for personal or financial information or account numbers.”
To report a scam, call (800) 852-5711 or visit ftb.ca.gov/help/scams. For more information about scams go to visit ftb.ca.gov/help/scams.
