George Charles Ash Jr., of Upland, died peacefully on October 22. He was 81.

George was born December 23, 1943, in Tampa, Florida, the son of a Texaco executive. His family relocated often during his childhood, giving him the opportunity to attend many schools in the southern United States. At 17, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving from 1961 to 1964. He later proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1967 to 1969, completing two tours in Vietnam during the height of the war. His lifelong motto, “Once a Marine, always a Marine,” guided him throughout his life.

After his military service, he settled in Southern California in 1969, where he pursued many entrepreneurial careers. Most recently he built and operated a successful landscape construction business for more than 35 years. “He was known for his strong work ethic, integrity, and dedication to his craft,” his family shared.

“George was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who cherished time spent with family and friends,” his family said. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, golf, tennis, horseback riding, and traveling.

He is survived by his loving wife, Patti; sister, Elizabeth Velez (Larry); son, George Ash III (Misty); daughter, Katie Elumbaugh (Brad); stepdaughter, Linda Kelly (Brian); stepson, Brian Wegley (Kelly); and son-in-law, Louis Weber. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Stevie.

“A warrior in combat and in life, George faced every challenge with courage and determination. He made a lasting impression on all who knew him and will be deeply missed,” his family said.
