‘America/Beautiful’ at Cal Poly Pomona Friday

Pianist Min Kwon performs the multiyear project “America/Beautiful” at 8 p.m. Friday, November 14 at Cal Poly Pomona’s Music Recital Hall, 3801 W. Temple Ave., Pomona. located in building 24, room 191. Tickets are $12-$22.50 at tix.com, search “Cal Poly Pomona,” and at the box office.

The program is a collaborative recital featuring Kwon and Cal Poly Pomona faculty, staff, and students, including Nadia Shpachenko, Iris Shiotsuki, Ryan Shiotsuki, Katie Bernardoni, Gianni Campos, Evan Huang, Josiah Kemp, Andrew Mazzeo, Jesse Ortiz, and Marina Zhang.

Renditions of “America the Beautiful” produced by Reena Esmail, Nico Muhly, Victoria Bond, Gyan Riley, Vijay Iyer, Avner Dorman, Melinda Wagner, Samuel Zyman, Dave Ragland, Christopher Trapani, and others will be performed.

“This project has grown into a multi-year commissioning initiative involving 76 composers from across generations and backgrounds, each reimagining America the Beautiful for solo piano,” Kwon wrote in a statement. “The works explore themes of identity, migration, diversity, and belonging, and together they form a kind of living anthology of American stories and ideals. With America’s 250th anniversary approaching in 2026, I am working to expand the project’s performances and presentations to include future generation of pianists, and thrilled to share this program with the community at Cal Poly Pomona.”
