Unusual car chase leads to multiple felony charges

Claremont police responded to multiple 911 calls at 4:30 p.m. Thursday about a shirtless man with a bottle of laundry detergent dancing around a grey Tesla with rear end damage in the in the middle of Indian Hill Boulevard. When officers arrived at Indian Hill Boulevard and Harrison Avenue, 30-year-old Newbury Park resident Diego Nocedal got in his car and drove north on Indian Hill. The low-speed chase ended three minutes later at Sixth Street and Mills Avenue when police utilized a precision immobilization technique, or PIT maneuver, to stop the car.

But the drama, it turned out, was just beginning.

Nocedal then barricaded himself inside his car and demanded to call his lawyer, his parents, and to finish the food he was eating, said CPD Sgt. Nicholas Martinez. Police stood by while he made phone calls and presumably finished his meal. After an hour of negotiations during which Nocedal was “vacillating between compliance and noncompliance,” Martinez said, he exited his car and was taken into custody.

A search of Nocedal’s car allegedly turned up psilocybin mushrooms, or magic mushrooms, and he was arrested for felony evasion and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance and obstructing a peace officer, and transported to CPD.

During booking Nocedal reportedly broke the jail’s booking computer and phone and got into an altercation with a jailer. Police then added felony destruction of jail property and misdemeanor battery on a jailer to his charges.

He was eventually booked and held for court. On Friday, he was transferred to the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles, where he is being held in front of a January 26 appearance in Pomona Superior Court.
