Obituary: Wendy Irving Hafner

Beloved mother, grandmother, sister, friend

Wendy Irving Hafner, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, died peacefully January 7 at the age of 71.

She was born on July 29, 1954, in St. John’s, Quebec, to Eric Irving, a retired Canadian Air Force Sergeant, and Hazel Irving. During her childhood, her family lived in England for four years before returning to Guelph, Ontario, where she completed elementary and high school. She went on to graduate from the University of Guelph with a degree in psychology.

After college, she worked as a social worker, a profession that reflected her compassion, empathy, and deep concern for others. She met her first husband, Dr. Samuel Hafner, and the two married in 1978 in Baden-Baden, Germany. In 1979, they moved to Claremont, where Sam began his medical career at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, and where she would build a life centered on family, friendship, and love.

She later married Paul Francoeur, with whom she shared many meaningful years. Both husbands preceded her in death.

Above all else, she loved being a mother and grandmother. Her family was her greatest joy, and she took immense pride in her daughters and grandsons. She cherished time spent together, whether during everyday moments or special gatherings. She also loved golf and spending summers in Laguna Beach, where the ocean and sunshine brought her peace and happiness.

“She will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, sense of humor, and the deep love she gave so freely,” her family shared. “Her presence brought comfort and familiarity, and her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew her.”

She is survived by her daughters Adrienne Hafner and her partner Gregor McNabb, and Megan Bacigalupi; son-in-law John Bacigalupi; beloved grandsons Josh and Ryan Bacigalupi; and her cherished grand-dog, Smasher.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, February 6 at Oak Park Cemetery, 410 Sycamore Ave., Claremont, CA 91711.
