Commission shelves renaming Cahuilla Park

The Community and Human Services Commission decided Wednesday night to maintain the name of the historic Claremont landmark regardless of recent debate over the possible inaccuracy of the naming of the park.

The decision was made with a 7-0 vote. Commissioner Andy Winnick and Vice Chair Butch Henderson chose to abstain.

Among reasons for not recommending a change was what the commission saw as an “unnecessary expenditure” during an economically volatile point in history.

“I just don’t think at this particular time, with the economy the way it is, it is a good time to consider spending any money to change the name,” said Commissioner Mauryce Feingold. “It is going to take $6500 plus a lot of staff time taken away from something else. I don’t even think we should consider this with the budget the way it is.”
