Claremont Community Services Department is seeking input from residents as it decides the fate of pine trees in the Claraboya neighborhood.
Residents can complete a survey at claremontca.gov, search “Claraboya tree survey.” The survey is open through Thursday, September 11. Results will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Monday, September 29 at community meeting at Alexander Hughes Community Center, 1700 Danbury Rd., Claremont.
City policy prohibits the removal of city-owned street trees unless they are dead, in a state of severe decline, or if they pose an immediate hazard. But, “… some unique conditions may exist that could warrant a more expedient removal and replacement program for the pine trees in the Claraboya area,” according to a city post at claremontca.gov. “This program may result in the removal of a number of large, healthy, well-established trees that would otherwise not be considered for removal.”
Claraboya property owners can choose a replacement species from the designated street tree list at claremontca.gov, search “reforestation program.”
The City Council in January directed staff to develop a removal and replacement plan for the neighborhood’s pine trees.
“While all of the City pine trees in the Claraboya neighborhood remain healthy and vigorous, we remain mindful of the existing concerns of the neighborhood,” read the city post. “At this time, the concerns of the neighborhood may outweigh the benefits these trees provide. Ultimately, all of the pine trees will need to be replaced with a species more appropriate for the neighborhood.”
