A symphony of family chatter, player enthusiasm, and cracking bats signaled the return of Claremont Fastpitch softball season February 28 at La Puerta Sports Park.
The organization’s opening day included Ava Miano of the 10-and-under Sharks delivering “The Star-Spangled Banner,” announcements of CFP’s board, raffle winners, a team parade, and scavenger hunt. Gentry Robertson, coach of Claremont Fastpitch’s inaugural 16U team, threw out the first pitch to his daughter and team catcher Raya Robertson.
Fastpitch’s 11 teams — boasting some 121 players and dozens of volunteers — took to the diamonds throughout the day. Results were as follows: in the 6U, age group, the Lavender Lions beat the Pink Flamingos, 17-4; in 8U, the Avocados defeated the Galaxy Girls, 7-1; in 10U, the Smurfs sunk the Sharks, 11-2, and San Dimas beat Riptide, 8-4; in 12U, San Dimas prevailed over the Heat, 8-4; in 14U, Claremont fell to La Verne, 4-1; and in 16U, Claremont debuted with a 14-4 win over Chino.
