Courier wins 12 California Journalism Awards
The Claremont Courier was recognized by the California News Publishers Association with 12 California Journalism Awards at a July 13 awards ceremony and dinner at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City. The awards honored the best of California journalism from 2023 and included nearly 3,000 entries from across the state.
The Courier won for the following work:
- Second place: Best newsletter, various editions, Skylar Anderson, Mick Rhodes; immigration reporting, “A border story” four parts, Mick Rhodes; and music writing/reporting, “Making music: the act is reward enough,” Mick Rhodes.
- Third place: Community calendar all divisions, various editions, Andrew Alonzo, Skylar Anderson; print special section cover, various editions, Skylar Anderson; and feature photo, “New ‘Care Court’ aims to treat severe mental illness,” Steven Felschundneff.
- Fourth place: Best podcast all divisions, “Sins of the father: a complicated legacy,” Mick Rhodes, Matt Weinberger; and coverage of local government, “Council approves restrictions on no-fault evictions,” Steven Felschundneff.
- Fifth place: Columns, various editions, Mick Rhodes; homelessness reporting, “Cash Whiteley is a man … on the mend,” Mick Rhodes; health reporting, “Fulbright scholar and Pitzer grad, 23, works to eradicate measles,” Lisa Butterworth; and news photo, “Pedestrian braves tropical storm Hilary,” Steven Felschundneff.
Notably, the Courier was competing against every newspaper and digital news outlet in the state in the community calendar and podcast categories, where it won third and fourth place awards, respectively. Calendar writer Andrew Alonzo and editorial designer and web producer Skylar Anderson won for community calendar, and podcast producer/editor Matt Weinberger and editor Mick Rhodes won for the August 25 podcast, “Sins of the father: a complicated legacy.”
The raft of awards follows a Courier record 19 wins — including five first place awards — in 2021, and nine more with three firsts in 2022.
