Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives are investigating a Claremont Police Department officer involved shooting on Saturday that resulted in the death of a 46-year-old Claremont man.
Claremont police received a call about 6 a.m. Saturday regarding a man threatening suicide at a residence just north of Jaeger Park along Alamosa Drive between Monticello Road and Bonnie Brae Avenue, according to the sheriff’s department. Arriving officers attempted to detain the man, later identified as Likune Sisay, who they say then brandished a knife and rushed at them, prompting police to discharge their weapons.
Larry Volz was visiting his father on Alamosa Drive when he was awakened about 6:15 a.m. by the sound of yelling, followed by four to five rapid gunshots, he said. A neighbor, who declined to give her name, reported seeing CPD officers walking backward along Alamosa Drive while shouting orders at someone before a flurry of shots rang out.
Officers attempted lifesaving measures on Sisay prior to him being transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff’s department. No police officers were injured in the incident.
As is standard with Claremont Police Department officer-involved shootings, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation.
