The City of Claremont has changed the March 20 state of the city address by Claremont Mayor Corey Calaycay from a ticketed event to a special meeting of the City Council in order to comply with the Brown Act, and reduced the cost of admission from $80 to free.

Hosted by the Claremont Chamber of Commerce at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 20, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, 555 W. Foothill Blvd., the event will also include remarks from the City Council.

“Accordingly, the Chamber must provide an opportunity for residents to participate at no cost, therefore in addition to the $60 (Chamber member) and $80 (non-member) prices for attendance, the public may attend at no cost and participate in the Council’s presentation without paying for lunch,” read an email from City Manager Adam Pirrie.

As a long time Claremont resident I was shocked to read this event originally required citizens to pay to hear the state of the city address. I’m glad this has been addressed and corrected.

Our city employs a full roster of educated and trained professionals. Not one of them considered the Brown Act when organizing a fee-charging public meeting? It did not occur to the Mayor, a public servant, an elected official, to consider the optics of charging a sum larger than an overnight parking ticket to hear him talk about our town to his constituents? Baffling.
