Pomona man jailed for attempted murder of police officer
Pomona resident Daniel Rombach, 46, is in custody on charges of attempted murder of a police officer and other felonies after allegedly firing a handgun at Claremont police from his moving vehicle the evening of May 8 during a 20-mile chase that shut down the eastbound 10 Freeway for miles.
“During the pursuit, the suspect shot multiple rounds from his vehicle at the pursuing officers,” according to a Claremont Police Department news release. “None of the pursuing officers were struck by the suspect’s gunfire during the pursuit.”
The pursuit through Claremont, Pomona, La Verne and Montclair began shortly before 7:38 p.m. and lasted about 30 minutes. It involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including an LA County Sheriff’s Department helicopter. It ended after police used a precision immobilization technique, or PIT maneuver, on the vehicle along an eastbound portion of the 10 Freeway near Indian Hill Boulevard, disabling it. Rombach then surrendered and police say they recovered a loaded firearm and additional loaded magazines at the scene.
The incident began after police responded to Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, 4031 N. Mills Ave., following 911 calls reporting gunshots being fired at an airborne drone. Witnesses provided a description of the suspect, who had left the area, and his vehicle. Arriving officers located the suspect near Mills Avenue and Foothill Boulevard and attempted to pull him over, but police say he failed to yield, setting off the pursuit.
Rombach also faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon, evading, and unlawful possession of a firearm, all felonies, and is being held in lieu of $2 million bail at the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles after being transferred from the Claremont jail early May 9. He was due to be arraigned Monday in Pomona Superior Court.
Those with information pertaining to the incident are encouraged to call CPD at (909) 399-5411.
