California voters passed Proposition 50 resoundingly on Tuesday, voting 5,291,908 to 2,989,022 according to the latest numbers available from the Associated Press.

The success of The Election Rigging Response Act means Norma Torres is Claremont’s new Representative on Congress, as the city moves from Judy Chu’s 28th Congressional District to Torres’ 35th.

“I want to thank California’s voters for their engagement and participation in the discussion over Prop 50,” Torres wrote in a statement on Tuesday. “While votes continue to be counted, I think the results are clear – California voters are sick and tired of Donald Trump’s efforts to undermine our democracy, our health care, and our state. Their choice to adopt Prop 50 is a decision to stop Donald Trump from rigging our democracy, and it is a rejection of his policies that are hurting our families.

“As a result of Prop 50’s adoption, the congressional district boundaries will change throughout our state. I have been honored to represent California’s 35th Congressional District, and I intend to run for re-election in the new 35th.  The new 35th Congressional district continues to contain the core of the current map. I look forward to earning the votes of constituents both new and old.

“Donald’s Trump’s disastrous presidency is hurting the working families of the Inland Empire so he can help his billionaire friends get more tax breaks. His presidency is focused on enriching himself at the expense of hard working American taxpayers, and terrorizing our friends and neighbors because of the color of their skin. He continues to ignore the high cost of living while stripping away affordable healthcare, food assistance, special education funding, and much more from tens of millions of Americans.

“It is a deeply dangerous time for our democracy, but I will continue to stand up against his attacks on our health care, our families, and the rule of law. I will continue to fight for the working families of the Inland Empire who struggle every day to make ends meet. And I’ll continue to bring federal investments to communities that are too often forgotten.

“Today, I am proud that Californians have used the democratic process to speak out in favor of accountability and to stop Donald Trump’s lawlessness.”
