Rotary Club’s holiday bike giveaway benefits local children

For the 24th year, the Rotary Club of Claremont delivered new bicycles to local children in need at a December 21 event at Claremont Presbyterian Church.

Now known as Bill’s Bikes for Kids Giveaway, the club purchased 28 bicycles at $150 each, and helmets. Volunteers from Claremont Senior Bike Group and Claremont High and El Roble Intermediate school interact clubs helped assemble them last week. The volunteers were also on hand at the event for last minute adjustments and to help with rider training.

The event included emcee Ron Coleman, plenty of corny jokes, food and drink, and a bike safety presentation. It was attended by Claremont school principals, CUSD Superintendent and Rotarian Jim Elsasser, Mayor Corey Calaycay, Mayor Pro Tem/Vice Mayor Jennifer Stark, and Council members Ed Reece and Sal Medina, among others.

Each student came to the stage to receive their bike with applause from the audience. For many it was their first time on a bicycle, and it showed as they slowly and carefully made their maiden rides with a family and friends guiding them.

The kids were grateful for the gifts, just in time for the holidays, and for the Rotarians and interact members who worked to make the giveaway a reality.

“The Rotary Club of Claremont hopes that this gift will not only bring joy to the children, but also inspire them to create lasting memories,” read a statement from the club.

As the morning ended, excited children — many riding a bicycle for the first time — practiced on their new bikes while families took photos.
