Sheriff’s deputy shot dead near Claremont

The man accused of killing a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputy in Rancho Cucamonga on Monday will be charged with murder, according to a sheriff’s spokesperson.

San Bernardino resident Angelo Jose Saldivar, 47, is accused of shooting and killing SB County Sheriff’s deputy Andrew Nunez, a 28-year-old 2015 graduate of Los Osos High School in Rancho Cucamonga. Nunez had six-years on the force and leaves behind a 2-year-old daughter and a pregnant wife.

Saldivar is alleged to have shot Nunez at 12:37 p.m. Monday after sheriff’s deputies were called to a condominium in the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive on reports of an armed man threatening a woman. Police said Saldivar fired at arriving officers, striking Nunez in the head, killing him. Saldivar then fled on a motorcycle, prompting a pursuit during which he reached speeds of 150 mph according to San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus.

Footage from KTLA news appears to show Saldivar removing his hands from the handlebars and pulling back the slide on a handgun during the chase, then crashing in the eastbound carpool lane of 210 Freeway, just west of Campus Avenue, about 1:30 p.m.

An off-duty SB County narcotics deputy helped bring the pursuit to an end by turning their car into Saldivar’s motorcycle, which had slowed to about 70 mph, causing the suspect to be ejected, Dicus said. The KTLA footage shows Saldivar tumbling through the air and coming to rest on the freeway. He was then airlifted to a local hospital by an emergency response medical helicopter, where he was reportedly in stable condition.
