Students reminded how to stay safe after apparent abduction attempt

Claremont Unified School District Assistant Superintendent, Student Services Kevin Ward informed the community via email that a female El Roble student walking home after school Wednesday near Condit Elementary School was approached by a man driving a red sedan. The man attempted to convince the girl to get into his vehicle by stating it was hot outside and that she should cool off. The student refused and ignored his repeated attempts before he eventually drove away.

The Claremont Police Department was contacted immediately, and plans were made to add patrols to the area for the rest of the week, according to Ward.

Anyone with information about the event is encouraged to call CPD at (909) 399-5411.

Ward’s email advised parents to “take a moment to remind your children of the importance of staying safe and knowing what to do if approached by a stranger,” and included safety tips for children such as staying alert, avoiding and not engaging in interactions with strangers, and to seek help if feeling unsafe.

“The safety of our students is our top priority, and we encourage you to have open conversations with your children about these important safety tips,” Ward wrote. “If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Thank you for your continued support in keeping our students safe.”
