Suspect in Claremont shooting charged with attempted murder

A Jurupa Valley man has been charged with attempted murder after a January 23 shooting in Claremont injured three people, including the alleged gunman.

The Claremont Police Department received multiple reports of gunfire in the 600 block of Colgate Place at 7:23 p.m. Thursday, January 23. Arriving officers found two male victims with critical gunshot wounds, as well as the alleged shooter, 33-year-old Erik Guevara of Jurupa Valley, and a handgun.

Guevara and the two victims were transported to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center for treatment. Guevara was released at 1:21 a.m. January 24 and subsequently arrested. Police refused requests for information on the victims’ condition. Guevara was booked at CPD on felony counts of attempted murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and for the Riverside warrant, and for misdemeanor petty theft.

Police declined to say whether the gun found at the scene was registered to Guevara, citing an ongoing investigation. They did say he had attempted to take property from one of the victims prior to the shooting. Police refused to divulge the victims’ ages or cities of residence.

Guevara was on post-release community supervision and had a felony warrant out of Riverside County at the time of the shooting, police said.

After booking in Claremont, Guevara was transferred to the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles, with bail set at $2,062,500. He was due to be arraigned in Pomona Superior Court today.
