A Jurupa Valley man has been charged with attempted murder after a January 23 shooting in Claremont injured three people, including the alleged gunman.

The Claremont Police Department received multiple reports of gunfire in the 600 block of Colgate Place at 7:23 p.m. Thursday, January 23. Arriving officers found two male victims with critical gunshot wounds, as well as the alleged shooter, 33-year-old Erik William Guevara of Jurupa Valley, and a handgun.

Guevara and the two victims were transported to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center for treatment. Guevara was released at 1:21 a.m. January 24 and subsequently arrested. He was then booked at CPD on two felony counts of attempted murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm, for the Riverside warrant, and for misdemeanor petty theft. He is being held in lieu of $7 million bail at Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles.

Claremont police denied requests for any information on the two shooting victims, and a Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center spokesperson was unable to release any information due to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act concerns.

Two neighbors on Colgate Place who requested anonymity said they saw a man checking car doors late January 23, presumably looking for an unlocked vehicle. The neighbors said the man found one in another neighbor’s driveway and got inside the car, and shortly after two men emerged from the home and confronted the man, who shot both of them. The neighbors said the man fired five to six rounds from what they believed to be a small caliber handgun.

A third person then emerged from the home and subdued the gunman until police arrived, neighbors said. Emergency personnel responded quickly, they added, and police remained at the scene until about 3 a.m. January 24.

Guevara was arrested by Riverside PD on December 26, 2024 on a Riverside County warrant stemming from a felony possession of a stolen vehicle charge, and was released January 7. He was on post-release community supervision at the time of the shooting, with an active Riverside County felony warrant still on the books, a CPD spokesperson said.

Claremont police declined to say whether the gun found at the scene was registered to Guevara, citing an ongoing investigation. They did say he had attempted to take property from one of the victims prior to the shooting, and that they are not looking for any other suspects.

After being booked in Claremont, Guevara was transferred to the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles. He was arraigned in Pomona Superior Court on Tuesday, January 28 and is now being held at Men’s Central Jail in LA in lieu of $7 million bail. His next Pomona Superior Court appearance is set for Tuesday, February 18.
