College Avenue to be closed for Dining in the Streets event
College Avenue, between Fourth and Sixth Streets, will be closed Friday, March 30, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the “Dining in the Streets” banquet and rally, a public event recognizing Cesar Chavez Day and supporting the Pomona College Dining hall workers.
Sponsored by Unite Here Local 11 and a number of other organizations, the event hopes to raise awareness of the dining workers’ attempts to unionize. The event also wishes to call attention to Pomona College’s firing of 17 immigrant workers—16 worked in the dining hall—in December.
The event itself will take place from noon to 2 p.m., beginning at noon with a march from Shelton Park at the corner of Harvard and Bonita Avenues, and continuing with free food and a number of speakers, including Judy Chu, Congresswoman from the 32nd Congressional District of California. An estimated 600 to 700 attendees are expected, according to representatives and event planners of Unite Here Local 11.
The event received approval by both the Traffic and Transportation Commission and the Claremont City Council.
