Goldie La’s storybook season comes to an end
Goldie La’s spectacular freshman season at Claremont High School came to an end Wednesday in the round of 16 at the CIF-Southern Section Individual Singles Championships at the Seal Beach Tennis Center.
Vivian Cheng, a junior at Santa Monica High School, used her strong ground strokes and attacking game style to overpower La, 6-3, 6-1, the first loss in La’s high school career, according to a CHS news release.
On Tuesday in a tough three-set battle, La defeated Alexis Golin from Oaks Christian High School, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, in Whittier.
“It took her a set to figure out how to handle her opponent’s pace and variety of spin, but once she did, she was able to control the points and ultimately the outcome of the match,” coach Kathy Settles said about La’s match with Golin.
La advanced to the round of 16 by winning four singles matches, three at the Claremont Club on November 20th and the one against Golin at Whittier Narrows. She ended her season with a 35-1 record and was the only freshman to advance to the round of 16 in the singles draw.
