Claremont seniors invited to audit courses at the Colleges

The Claremont Senior Program will continue its free Claremont Avenues for Lifelong Learning (CALL) program, which is designed to permit those 60 years of age and older to audit courses at the Claremont Colleges during the Fall 2012 semester.

A schedule of classes and applications are now available at the Joslyn Center, 660 N. Mountain Ave. or online at www.ci.claremont.ca.us under the “Seniors” tab on the left side of the city’s home page.

Registration closes Friday, August 3. Classes will be filled on a first come, first serve basis, with priority given to Claremont residents. For more information, call 399-5488.

Musical theater workshop

The Camp?Broadway summer musical theater workshop in acting, singing and movement is for students entering third grade through seventh grade. The 2-week program runs August 6 through 17, with classes held from 9 a.m. until noon, Monday through Friday, at the Claremont Community School of Music. The cost is $200. Course instructors include Lissa Supler Slay, acting; Donna Marie Minano from Inland Valley Repertory Theatre; and Amanda Minano, teaching music and movement.

Students will learn acting techniques and read scenes and monologues from plays appropriate for their age, such as Annie, Wicked, Seussical the Musical, Les Miserables, Mary Poppins and more.

Each child will receive audition material to take home with them. They will learn songs and movement and perform on stage, and they will receive their own CD with songs to practice at home.

CST President Jerry Campbell announces retirement

Jerry D. Campbell, sixth president of the Claremont School of Theology and the founding president of Claremont Lincoln University, announced his retirement from both positions effective June 30, 2013.

Though stepping away from day-to-day operations, Dr. Campbell has accepted an invitation from the Claremont Lincoln Board of Trustees to become University Chancellor beginning July 1, 2013. In this ongoing role, Dr. Campbell will serve as a senior adviser and ambassador for Claremont Lincoln University.

West End of Auxiliary makes donation to Children’s Fund

The West End Auxiliary of Claremont recently presented a check for $67,500 to Children’s Fund, Inc., a nonprofit organization in San Bernardino.

The Claremont/West End Auxiliary assists Children’s Fund’s mission of “preventing child abuse in our community; to ensure that at-risk children who are abused, neglected, impoverished or abandoned receive adequate food, shelter, clothing and education, medical and dental care; and to provide equal opportunity for social development for these children.”

This year, through Claremont/West End Auxiliaries continued support, Children’s Fund has been able to aid 42,000 children, totaling $1.8 million in assistance to at-risk children and teens.

Through various fundraising events throughout the year, such as the auxillary’s annual English Tea, the Claremont Home Tours and participation in the State Farm Collegiate Golf Tournament, the Claremont/West End Auxiliary was able to break a record with fundraising efforts in spite of the current economic climate.

The donation will directly assist the Children’s Fund Children’s Assessment Center, which is San Bernardino County’s only one-stop center designed to reduce the trauma of child abuse victims. The center provides treatment from specially-trained physicians and staff in a child-friendly setting.

Claremont/West End Auxiliary has supported local organizations such as CLASP as well as Shoes That Fit.
