Eleanor Clift to explore the political road ahead

Eleanor Clift, political reporter, television pundit and author, examines the outcome of the 2012 elections in “The Road Ahead: Is There a Mandate for Change?” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 29 in Scripps College’s Garrison Theater, 231 E. 10th St. This lecture is free and open to the public.

As a contributor to Newsweek magazine and the Daily Beast, Ms. Clift writes about politics and policy in Washington, DC. She has covered every presidential campaign since 1976. Formerly Newsweek’s White House correspondent, Ms. Clift also served as congressional and political correspondent for 6 years. She was a key member of the magazine’s 1992 election team, following the campaign of President Bill Clinton from the start to inauguration day. In June 1992, she was named the news magazine’s deputy Washington bureau chief.

City senior program volunteers needed

The Claremont Senior Program is looking for talented, community-orientated individuals interested in sharing their passion with the community. Instructors and group leaders are sought to provide low-cost and/or voluntary activities for the spring quarter, which begins in March. Proposals must be submitted by Friday, November 30. Get merry while shopping the Village

Businesses in the Claremont Village are sponsoring the 2nd annual “The More the Merrier” contest from Friday, November 23 through Monday, December 24. One lucky Village shopper will win a $100 Claremont Chamber of Commerce gift card.

Village shoppers are encouraged to collect all of their receipts from Village shops, salons and restaurants, dated beginning November 23, and take them to one of 8 village businesses where the receipts will be validated. A contest entry form must be filled out for each receipt.  All Village purchases are welcome and there is no age requirement. Receipts for any amount are accepted and there is no limit to the number of entries.

The More the Merrier validation stations are Aromatique Skin and Body Care, Bert and Rocky’s Cream Co., Colors 91711, Stamp Your Heart Out, Sonja Stump Photography, Claremont Village Treasures, International Glass and Bead Co. and The Bath Workshop.

All receipts must be validated by Tuesday, January 1, 2013 and the winning name will be drawn January 2. 

Friends of the Claremont Library host book-lovers book sale

With the holidays upon us, the Friends of the Claremont Library will host its annual book sale, Saturday, December 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the library.

An array of unique and distinctive books will be available, sure to delight each person on your gift list.

Sale organizers note there will be plenty for gifts, and plenty to keep for yourself. Some examples include:

Social media and its impact on education

Christine Greenhow will discuss “Social Media and Learning: Students Getting Help from Friends” at Garrison Theater on Tuesday, November 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Ms. Greenhow, assistant professor, department of counseling, educational psychology and special education at Michigan State, will explore the impact of digital literacy and digital citizenship on college-aged students and those just entering the work force.

Knowing how to effectively use social media is fast becoming a required skill as college admissions officers and employers increasingly want candidates with social media savvy. Developing an effective social presence via LinkedIn, Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, for example, is a must.

Ms. Greenhow will stress how students are increasingly expected to develop these 21st century competencies despite wide variability in the quality of learning opportunities schools provide. Social network sites (SNSs), and the relationships that develop therein, provide supportive opportunities for learning that can complement or supplement school-based opportunities.

In the talk, Ms. Greenhow will explore what current educational research has to say about how adolescents and young adults, especially those from low-income families, are using social network sites and new social networking applications to their advantage.

CHS alumni reunion at Casa de Salsa

This Friday, November 23 beginning at 6:30 p.m., an informal gathering of CHS class of 1984 to 1991 alumni will be held at Casa de Salsa restaurant.

The event is designed for old friends and classmates to reconnect while home visiting with family.

There is no cost to attend, but food and cocktails are the responsibility of the individuals in attendance.
