Claremont voters eager for another chance at the polls with the upcoming municipal election might be left disappointed, as this year’s bid might not happen.

As of Monday evening—a week before the nomination period for Claremont City Council comes to an end—the city had only received nomination applications from Mayor Larry Schroeder and Councilmember Corey Calaycay, both re-running for office. No other candidate had filed or even picked up an application, according to City Clerk Lynne Fryman.

The city seeks to elect 2 city council members with a 4-year term at the upcoming March 5 municipal election. If no one else runs, pending a decision by city council, the election will be cancelled and Mr. Schroeder and Mr. Calaycay will be placed back in office, according to Ms. Fryman.

The last time the Claremont municipal election was canceled was in 1988. In that election, former councilmembers Bill McCready and Judy Wright were reappointed. 

Eight candidates vied for the council’s 3 open seats in the city’s last election, held in March 2011. The last time Mr. Schroeder and Mr. Calaycay were up for reelection, only one other person ran against them—Bridget Healy, the city’s former assistant city manager.

Three-time candidate Michael Keenan has yet to make up his mind on whether or not he will seek a fourth time running.

Residents and registered voters of the city of Claremont are eligible to run for election, but must file applications with the city by this Monday, December 10  at 6 p.m. Interested persons may stop by the city clerk’s office, located within City Hall at 207 Harvard Ave., for a filing guide and to drop off applications.
