CHS sports teams look for early season magic
CHS boys basketball to play in OC tourney
Claremont lost in the knockout game of the Sierra/Baldwin tournament to California but rebounded with 2 wins in a row against Keppel, 54-41, and Rowland, 71-53. Chris Edward led the way against Keppel with 17 points. Against Rowland, Omar Mahmoud scored 21 points on 60 percent shooting. The Wolfpack next play in the North Orange County Championships next week. Claremont’s girls team began the season with a 40-26 loss to Glendora, then bounced back to subdue Garey 55-16. CHS host Walnut on Thursday, December 6 at 5 p.m.
Boys soccer fights through tournament
The Wolfpack participated in the 24-team Chris Heyman Memorial Tournament this weekend, going 1-3 in their matches. Claremont lost to Etiwanda 2-1 and Colton 1-0. The Pack beat Moreno Valley 2-1 in the consolation bracket quarterfinals, then dropped the consolation semifinal 3-2 to Chaffey. Claremont’s next match is away at Chino this Thursday, December 6 at 3:15 pm.
Gaines’ 49 points not enough to seal win
Webb boys basketball beat Ganesha and Bloomington Christian on the way to the final of the Webb Classic Invitational, but fell to Excelsior 68-64 in the championship game.
Senior Silas Gaines had 49 points against Excelsior, but could not lead the Gauls to a last-gasp win. Boys and girls coach Rick Duque looks to improve on last season’s playoff appearance, where the boys were bounced in the first round. Webb next plays in the CSDR Riverside Tournament this Friday-Sunday. Vivian Webb girls basketball plays this weekend in the Vivian Webb Invitational at Les Perry Gym this Thursday-Saturday, after a tough 50-29 loss to Fairmont Prep.
Gauls soccer shows winning potential
Webb boys soccer trounced Whittier Christian 4-0 last weekend, starting the season off strong Coach Lucky Termisanren will look to repeat last year’s playoff-clinching league finish, after which the Gauls won their 1st round CIF match before being knocked out. The Gauls host Loma Linda this Thursday, December 6 at 3:30 p.m. on Chandler Field. Vivian Webb lost its first match of the season in a close match against Montclair, 1-0. Former US international defender Cle Kooiman coaches the Gauls, who also host Loma Linda at the same date and time, but on Faculty Field.
