A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed, and a second person was injured last Thursday night in the parking lot of Montclair Place shopping mall.
Police received a 911 call about shots fired at the location at 8:10 p.m. February 2 and quickly cordoned off a parking lot at the northeast corner of the mall, according to Montclair Police Department Sgt. Andrew Graziano.
Graziano said two people got into an altercation somewhere in the mall and later separated, after which police received the emergency call of shots fired.
Police discovered the teen in the parking lot with gunshot wounds to his chest, and he was transported to a local trauma center where he died. The other injured person was in surgery at the same hospital according to police.
NBC News 4 photographer Alex Vasquez was at the scene shortly after police arrived and reported that a witness told him it was “a running or rolling gun battle.”
The investigation is ongoing and police do not have a suspect in custody. The Target store across the street was briefly on lockdown after witnesses ran to that store following the shooting, according to police. The store was reopened after officers cleared the area.
