April events at Claremont Lewis Museum

Maloof It Off the Roof
Claremont Lewis Museum of Art, 200 W. First St., hosts the free “Maloof It Off the Roof” event from 6 to 7 p.m. during the Saturday, April 6, Claremont Art Walk. As part of the current exhibition, “This is not a chair.,” artists and furniture makers will drop “chairs” from CLMA’s roof with musical accompaniment. The performance event is based on tales that a young Sam Maloof would drop his chairs from the roof of his garage to test joint strength.

Jack Rogers Hopkins film screening
“Jack Rogers Hopkins: California Design Maverick,” a 30-minute documentary about the modernist sculptor, will be screened for free at the museum’s Calaycay Gallery at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 11. A discussion with director Katie Nartonis and Jim Rawitsch, executive director of the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts and Crafts, will follow. The program is held in conjunction with CLMA’s “This is not a chair.” exhibit and “Jack Rogers Hopkins: California Design Maverick” at the Maloof Foundation, 5131 Carnelian St., Alta Loma.

Art night out: The Perfect Pair
CLMA hosts “The Perfect Pair,” an art night out event, Thursday, April 18, from 6 to 9 p.m. Furniture from the “This is not a chair.” exhibition will be paired with Claremont Craft Ales selections. Guests over 21 can sip beer while exploring the galleries with artists and CLMA Executive Director Martin Betz. General admission is $50, $40 for museum members.
