E-bike survey closes September 6
The City of Claremont’s electric bike survey runs through Friday, September 6 at form.jotform.com/claremonthumanservices/ebikes, or click on the “news” tab at ci.claremont.ca.us.
The survey is open to all and meant to gather public input regarding the regulation of e-bikes in the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park and Thompson Creek Trail. Data will shape future policies for the recreational areas.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles defines that an electric bicycle is “a bicycle equipped with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts.” State law does not classify motorcycles, motor-driven cycles, motorized scooters, or mopeds — which are prohibited in both areas — as e-bikes.
There are three classes of electric bicycles: class one e-bikes are generally pedal-assisted bikes that reach a maximum speed of 20 mph; class two reach a speed of 20 mph but are throttle-assisted; and class three are pedal-assisted and equipped with a speedometer that can reach up to 28 mph. Class one and two e-bikes are permitted in the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park and along Thompson Creek Trail. Class three e-bikes are prohibited.
