New ceramics exhibit at Scripps
The first exhibition of the year at Scripps College’s Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery, “Evolving Ideas: The Ceramics of Ruenell Foy Temps,” opens Saturday, August 17 at 251 E. 11th St., Claremont. It runs through Sunday, September 15. The gallery is free and open to public viewing from noon to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday.
The first exhibition dedicated to the late artist in more than 30 years, it features some 40 works by Temps including about 15 never before seen that were gifted to Scripps by Temps’ husband, Clifford.
The installation “examines Temps’ functional and sculptural ceramics from the 1970s to the early 2000s, highlighting her stunning signature technique of constructing tall vases from a single clay slab and her skillful ornamentation,” according to a news release. “The show will explore her complex yet intuitive approach to ceramics while calling attention to gender biases she confronted throughout her career.”
A free and public closing celebration takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, September 14. For more information visit rcwg.scrippscollege.edu or call (909) 607-3397.
