Prison Library Project needs Spanish language donations

The Prison Library Project, a nonprofit organization that ships hundreds of books yearly to prisons nationwide, is requesting donations of Spanish language fiction and nonfiction literature.

Requests include “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway; “Las 4000 Palabras Mas Usadas En Ingles” (“The 4,000 Most Used Words in English,” Spanish and English editions); and various Merriam-Webster Spanish to English dictionaries.

A list of sought-after books can be found at bookshop.org and amazon.com — click the links provided at claremontforum.org/prisonlibraryproject.

In addition, the project is in need of new or gently used paperback fiction; LGTBQ+ affirming books; African American and Native American fiction; memoirs; art books; coffee table books; science fiction and fantasy novels; children’s books and coloring books; vintage books; educational material that highlight trade and/or crafting skills; games and sports literature; activity books such as crossword puzzles, word searches, and sudoku; dictionaries and grammar books; self-help books; texts that cover sexual abuse, trauma, and addiction; manga and comic books; westerns; and reference books such as paperback almanacs, thesauri, and atlases.

All donations need to be bagged or boxed. No loose books will be accepted. The project will also not accept books that are damaged, religious or political propaganda; books advocating racist, violent, misogynistic, or homophobic ideologies or hate speech; mass-market paperback romances and mysteries; outdated materials; encyclopedias; magazines (save National Geographic); books on cassette; or VHS tapes.
