‘Scandinavian Realms’ at CCL
The Claremont Colleges Library exhibit, “Scandinavian Realms: The Library of Waldemar Westergaard,” runs through Friday, August 2, at CCL’s North Lobby Gallery, 800 N. Dartmouth Ave. Library hours are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays.
The exhibit focuses on the late Waldemar Westergaard, a professor of history at Pomona College from 1916-1925, then at UCLA from 1925-1949. Westergaard, a second-generation immigrant to Danish parents, “championed the study of northern Europe, with a particular emphasis on the history of Denmark,” according to the exhibit’s description.
Curated by Westergaard Postdoctoral Fellow Josh Hodil and students, highlights include “The Danish Atlas” of Erik Pontoppidan; letters of Mary Wollstonecraft written during her time in Scandinavia; “The Compleat History of Sweden” by Samuel von Pufendorf; a 17th-century treatise on Danish Viking-Age runestones; and an 18th-century natural history of Greenland.
