Local partnership helps clears cases for 250 homeless people
More than 250 misdemeanor cases impacting homeless individuals were cleared June 25 as part of a partnership between University of La Verne’s College of Law and Public Service, the Randall Lewis Center for Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Social Impact, and a number of San Bernardino County agencies including the District Attorney’s and Public Defender’s offices. Judge Ingrid Uhler handled the proceedings, according to a news release.
“Many unhoused and transient people face significant barriers attending court, resulting in unresolved misdemeanor warrants and fines hindering their ability to clear their records,” ULV College of Law and Public Service Dean Kevin Marshall in a statement. “Shelter Court offers a temporary refuge for vulnerable individuals navigating life’s challenges. Ultimately, it provided attendees a space to rest, belong, and recharge on their respective journeys. It was indeed a day of grace.”
Volunteers also handed out food, clothing, and hygiene products, and Department of Motor Vehicles staff helped with ID and license renewals.
