State awards Chaparral, Sumner Danbury distinguished status

Chaparral and Sumner Danbury were among the 336 elementary schools recently awarded a 2025 California Distinguished School honor by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond in April.

Chaparral Elementary was recognized for “exceptional student performance,” Sumner Danbury for “closing the achievement gap.”

“Schools recognized for Exceptional Student Performance are among the highest in overall student achievement, while also showing strong indicators of student engagement and positive school climate,” according to a news release at cde.ca.gov. “Schools recognized for Closing the Achievement Gap have demonstrated exemplary growth for student groups that have experienced persistent achievement gaps and have also demonstrated strong overall outcomes for all students.”
