Obituary: David Shofler

Loving husband, father, son, friend, doctor and teacher

David Shofler, 40, died suddenly during May.

A polymath with a quick wit and dry sense of humor, Dave will be sorely missed by his family, friends, coworkers and students.

He was born in Pasadena. After earning a degree in mathematics from UC Berkeley, he earned his doctor of podiatric medicine degree at Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. There he met his wife, Sarah.

The couple moved back to California, eventually settling in Claremont. They complemented each other perfectly and started a wonderful family with three amazing children.

He completed his podiatric surgery residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, before becoming a professor of podiatric medicine, surgery and biomechanics at Western University of Health Sciences, College of Podiatric Medicine. His extensive research was published in academic podiatric journals.

He loved spending time with his family, and especially enjoyed camping, kayaking, skiing and exploring the outdoors. He also enjoyed playing music and, in particular, was a great harmonica player known to practice in the car while stuck in Los Angeles traffic. He had a keen mind for numbers and was an excellent and avid poker player.

He is survived by his wife Sarah and three children; his parents Raymond and Barbara; sister Jessica (Brian), and brother Alex (Anna).
