Pilgrim Place resident Dorothy Hintz died on March 6, 2012 in the Pilgrim Place Health Services Center.

“There’s just nothing good enough that I can say about Dorothy,” said friend and Pilgrim Place resident Henry Hayden. “She was a wonderful, wonderful person.

Born Dorothy Storm in West Hartford, Connecticut to Mack Payne and Ruth Crosby Storm, Mrs. Hintz spent her grade school years in Baldwinsville, New York. After moving with her family to Swarthmore, Pennsylvania and graduating from high school there in 1936, she earned an RN degree at the University of Rochester School of Nursing.

While in training at Rochester, Mrs. Hintz enjoyed frequent outings with seminarians from the nearby Colgate Rochester Divinity School. On one such outing, she met her future husband, August McCurdy Hintz. Upon marrying, she moved to Dayton, Ohio where he served as director of Christian education at the First Baptist Church.

After 2 years in Dayton, Mrs. Hintz and her husband moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1942 where Rev. Hintz became the pastor. During their 11 years there, all 4 of their children were born: John, Judy and the twins, William and Robert. In 1953, an invitation to pastor a church in Chicago took Mrs. and Rev. Hintz to Illinois for 10 years. A final pastorate relocated them Seattle, Washington in 1963.

Following Rev. Hintz’s death in 1976, Mrs. Hintz remained in Seattle for 14 years and returned to the nursing profession, specializing in newborn and intensive care infants. In her leisure time, she pursued several new interests, including sailing and cross-country skiing.

In 1990, Mrs. Hintz came to Pilgrim Place where she made many friends and served on numerous committees. Fellow Pilgrim Ruth Auld, who was also retired nurse, appreciated her friend’s warm and caring personality.

“She was a very kind, gentle person,” she said. “I will miss her smile and her interest in everything.”

Mr. Hayden, who shared countless meals and conversations with Mrs. Hintz at Pilgrim Place, also remarked on the interest she showed in so many things, most importantly about the people in her life.

“Dorothy had a vivacious and very, very sweet personality. She would always ask me about what I was doing…when you talked with her, she wouldn’t talk about herself, she would ask about who you were and about what you were doing. She was very interested and loving.”

Mrs. Hintz is survived by her daughter, Judy Cox of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; her sons, Robert Hintz of San Antonio, Texas and John Hintz of San Diego; her 3 granddaughters, Nicole Murray, Sunava Hintz and Tammie Cox; and her 3 great-grandchildren, Chloe and Shea Murray and Micah Coniglio. She was preceded in death by her husband, August M. Hintz, in 1976; and by her son, William Hintz, in 2007.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, June 15, 2012 in Decker Hall at Pilgrim Place.
