Obituary: Edward Leroy Brant

Husband, father, educator

Edward Brant was born August 1, 1933 in Columbus, Ohio. He died April 21 in Rancho Cucamonga.

Ed spent his childhood years in Ohio and attended Ohio State University. After college, he enrolled in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Long Beach. There he met his first wife Gayle and together they had two daughters. He continued his education at Cal State Los Angeles, where he earned his Master of Education degree in industrial arts.

He then moved to Claremont and was hired by Central School District in Rancho Cucamonga, where he taught woodshop and coached a variety of sports. One of his favorite assignments was teaching seventh and eighth graders how to build fishing rods. He would then take the class on a deep sea fishing adventure. He was always the first one to get seasick and always had handful of soda crackers.

He and his beloved wife Patti later moved from Claremont to a ranch in Mt. Baldy. He enjoyed the ranch life, where they spent years entertaining family and friends and he continued his love for woodworking, spending time building birdhouses and other wood projects.

He had a love for tennis and spent his free time playing at the Claremont Club. He played up into his 80s, then took up pickleball. And if he wasn’t on the court on Saturdays, he could be found at all the local garage sales, where he never paid the seller’s asking price. He loved finding deals.

He spent his summers on the San Juan Islands in Washington. He enjoyed playing the local golf course there, biking the surrounding islands, and fishing. He ventured into boating but made his passengers uneasy and was subsequently convinced (by them) that it wasn’t for him.

He is survived by his daughters Kathleen (Brad) Pederson of Park City, Utah, and Brenda (Gary) Havro of Claremont; grandsons Connor (Vanessa) Havro of Whitefish, Montana, Brant Havro of Laguna Beach, Landen Pederson of Salt Lake City, Utah; and great grandson Wyatt Havro.

He was preceded in death by his wife Patti.

A private family ceremony will be held in the San Juan Islands.
