Obituary: Elvira Leticia Cuevas-Fisch

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend

Elvira Leticia Cuevas-Fisch, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend, died on June 2 at age 70. She was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, to Jose and Dolores Cuevas. As a child, Elvira and her family moved to Los Angeles. Together with her three sisters and two brothers, she grew up in Boyle Heights, a wonderfully diverse community that helped her forge a proud identity that was fully American and Mexican.

A product of Catholic primary and secondary schools, she attended Pitzer College, where she developed a deep affection for the City of Claremont. She went on to become a registered nurse and worked in a variety of departments, including the intensive care unit, GI lab, and internal medicine. She took great pride in her roles as a caregiver to her patients and a mentor to her colleagues. Eventually, she and her husband decided to set down roots in Claremont, where they raised their sons.

She never tired of spending time in her hometown. She ate and shopped in the Village, watched the Fourth of July parades at Memorial Park, and served as a room mom and Cub Scout leader at her church. She enjoyed hosting parties at her house in Towne Ranch, especially her annual Christmas Tree decorating party. “There was no occasion too small to celebrate, and anyone ready to lend a hand with last-minute preparations, dive into the swimming pool, or ante up at the poker table was welcome,” her family shared. “She had a hug and smile at the ready for every person who arrived at her doorstep.

“Her great love for her family, her home, and the city of Claremont will endure forever.”

Elvira is survived by her husband, Gerald; sons, Daniel and Steven; daughters-in-law, Stephania and Lupe; granddaughters, Gabrielle and Madeleine; and grandpups, Wolk, Luna, Sandia, and Lola.

A rosary and visitation will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 21 at Todd Memorial Chapel, 325 N. Indian Hill Blvd., Claremont, CA 91711. A funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, 435 N. Berkeley Ave., Claremont, CA 91711, at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 22.
