Obituary: Gayle Bisk Ginsburg

Grandmother, interior designer, volunteer

Gayle Bisk Ginsburg, a much loved wife, mother, and grandmother, died January 8, a few months shy of her 86thbirthday.

Gayle was born on March 11, 1939, in Chicago. Her family moved to Los Angeles when she was 6. She attended University High School, and upon graduation in 1957, she enrolled at UCLA. The following fall, she transferred to the University of California, Berkeley, where she was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority.

She met her future husband, Roger Ginsburg, during her sophomore year at UC Berkeley. They were married on November 1, 1959. They moved to Reno, Nevada, Roger’s hometown, and she quickly became involved in community activities. She became the president of Teenage Opportunity Program, a community service project of the Reno Service League. She also joined the Junior League, eventually serving as chapter president.

In 1971, the couple moved to Sacramento, where her husband entered law school. Following his 1974 graduation, they moved to Claremont, where he joined a law firm. She took a job as school secretary of Sycamore Elementary School. She later worked at Claremont High School in the career center. She was appointed to the Los Angeles Board for Career Education, and she also became a member of the Claremont Committee on Education. Additionally, she was a long-standing member of the Curtain Raisers of The Claremont Colleges, and the Foothill Philharmonic Committee.

She served for 12 years as a member of the board of trustees of Congregational Homes, and as chair of its buildings and grounds committee for six years. During this time, she returned to school at Chaffey College and took classes in interior design. After completing the courses, she opened her own interior design business. Her good friend Margie Beal joined her as a partner for approximately 10 years.

In 2015, the couple became residents of Mt. San Antonio Gardens, where she resided until her death.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children Gregory, who resides in Oakland, California, and Leslie, who lives in Claremont. She also leaves grandchildren Katherine (Katie), Mark, Ryan, and Kyra, and many longtime friends.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 11 at the Mt. Sam Antonio Gardens Social Center, 700 E. Harrison Ave., Pomona, CA 91767.
