Obituary: Jack Dwayne Blair
Beloved father, grandfather, public servant, world traveler
Jack Dwayne Blair, age 88, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on August 5 in Claremont. He was born March 21, 1936, in Astoria, Oregon, to parents Ralph and Anna Blair. He later moved to California where he married Pamela Blair, “his one true love, and together they raised their family,” his family shared.
Jack graduated from Chaffey High School in Ontario, then served in the U.S. Army for two years, honing his discipline and leadership skills, which would later define his career in law enforcement. “Jack dedicated his life to public service and community,” his family said.
In July, 1960 he began a 30-year career with the Pomona Police Department, advancing through the ranks while working in multiple divisions along the way. He earned a master’s degree in public administration from the University of La Verne, and rose to the rank of captain, before retiring as acting chief of police in 1990.
He volunteered with The Salvation Army, and for other community organizations, and after retirement from PPD worked as director of security for Pomona Fairplex. He later took a position as the director of security and safety at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, a job he held for 17 years. He also served as a commissioner on Claremont’s Traffic and Transportation Committee from 2016 until his recent October 2023 resignation.
Beyond his professional life, he was an avid outdoorsman, traveled the world extensively, and his passion for cycling and hiking kept him active throughout his life. He ran 15 of LA Marathons, finishing his final race well into his 70s.
He is survived by his sons, Terry Blair and Dwayne Blair; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Anna Blair; brother, Ralph Blair Jr.; and “the love of his life and mother of his children, Pamela T. Blair,” his family said.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 7 at Todd Memorial Chapel, 570 N. Garey Ave., Pomona, CA 91767. The service will be followed by a celebration of life luncheon at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Pilgrim Hall, located directly across the street from the chapel. “Friends, family, and community members are invited to join in celebrating Jack’s remarkable life and legacy,” his family said.
