Obituary: Peggy Baker Nall

Great-grandmother, teacher, traveler, tireless volunteer

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Peggy Baker Nall, 94, of Claremont, on June 20, 2025,” her family shared.

Peggy was born to the late Cleta and Raymond Baker on January 14, 1931 in Richmond, Virginia. She earned a bachelor’s degree at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia in 1953, where she also met Ted Nall. They married a year after graduation. Ted’s career in banking kept them on the move for the next 15 years while living in Maryland, Virginia, California and the Bahamas.

In 1968, they returned to California, living in Covina for 10 years before relocating to Claremont. She settled in for 11 years of teaching at the same school, Covina’s Cedargrove Elementary, in the Charter Oak School District. While there, she served as a master teacher with Cal Poly Pomona’s teacher prep program, co-authored school improvement and early childhood education plans, served on countless committees, and worked diligently to advance the teaching profession in numerous offices in her local professional organization.

After resigning from her teaching post in 1980, she enjoyed having the time to work on John Anderson’s 1980 presidential campaign, earn a library media technical assistant certificate from Citrus College, and follow her interests in genealogy, writing, book collecting, and traveling. She also joined the Claremont League of Women Voters as observer of the city’s traffic safety commission, and served as an elder at Claremont Presbyterian Church.

In 1995, her love of music led her to join The Foothill Philharmonic Committee of The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, where she served on the board of directors as membership chair, helping to organize fundraising activities to benefit the orchestra.

She is survived by her husband, Ted Nall; daughters Karen N. Marcarello and husband, Tom, of Happy Valley, Oregon, and Laurie N. Horton and husband, Robert, of Prescott, Arizona; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister.

A private family service will be held.
