Police Blotter: July 14, 2023
Tuesday, July 4
A resident in the 200 block of west Baseline Road got a surprise just after 3 p.m. after discovering a man sleeping in the home’s garage. Arriving Claremont Police Department officers questioned Glendora resident Vincent Barbera, 36. A records check revealed Barbera had a court order to stay away from the home and had been arrested May 7 for violating the same order. He was then arrested and transported to the Claremont jail where he was booked and later released with a citation.
At 9:17 p.m. a resident in the 100 block of Amarillo Drive got a bigger surprise when he discovered three people inside his home attempting to steal valuables. He immediately called the police, but the trio of suspected robbers had already left with an unknown amount of the man’s property. Evidence was recovered by police who said an investigation is ongoing. There are no suspect descriptions at this time.
Thursday, July 6
Police were called to the 400 block of Taylor Drive at 8:46 a.m. regarding a hit-and-run accident. When officers arrived, they noticed a parked vehicle with collision damage. Through their investigation police learned the suspect, Claremont resident Benjamin Steinberg, 20, was still in the area. When officers found Steinberg he allegedly appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance and was arrested for DUI after field sobriety tests. He was taken to the Claremont jail where he reportedly provided a chemical sample, was held for detoxification, and later released with a citation to appear in Pomona Superior Court.
Saturday, July 8
Police are still sorting out exactly what happened around 2:20 a.m. when two cars collided, blocking the intersection of Mills Avenue and Sixth Street. One of the drivers, Salvador Murrillo, 42, residence unknown, allegedly appeared to be intoxicated and was arrested for DUI. A records check on a passenger in one of the cars, Deicy Villa Gomez, 39, of Azusa, revealed she had a warrant. Both were arrested and taken to the Claremont jail.
Monday, July 10
Police were called to the 700 block of San Jose Avenue at 1:36 a.m. regarding a fight between two groups of young people. According to police several people were involved in a physical altercation at the location and at some point one brandished a knife and another produced a firearm. Upon their arrival police contacted Saleh Mamduh, 20, of Ontario and Rashid Aljalal, 18, of Claremont, who had allegedly been fighting. They were both arrested for battery. The person with the gun fled the scene prior to the officers’ arrival. Police are working to identify that person. Mamduh and Aljalal were taken to the CPD jail, booked, and later released with citations to appear in court.
