Police Blotter: June 23, 2023

Monday, June 12
Claremont Police Department officers on patrol conducted a 10:52 p.m. traffic stop on Upland resident Manuel Zazueta Pena, 30, at Foothill and Indian Hill boulevards. After questioning Zazueta Pena officers suspected he might be intoxicated and administered field sobriety tests. He was arrested for driving under the influence and transported to the police station where he allegedly refused to provide a chemical sample. Police obtained a search warrant to obtain the sample, which Zazueta Pena continued to refuse. He was subsequently charged with misdemeanor refusing a court order, held for detoxification,  and later released on a citation to appear at Pomona Superior Court.

 

Tuesday, June 13
Officers conducting extra patrol at the request of a business owner located a man and a woman in a parked car behind Carducci’s Tuxedo at 1346 N. Towne Ave. at 2:44 a.m. A records check showed a felony warrant for burglary for the man, Clinton King, 31, of San Dimas. Police arrested King and advised the woman she was trespassing. King was transported to the Claremont jail, where he was booked and held for court.

 

Wednesday, June 14
A passerby called police at 1:23 a.m. to report a car had crashed into the curb and a bush on Cambridge Avenue at the railroad tracks. Arriving officers reported Pomona resident Timothy Johnson, 20, was still in his car but was unresponsive. They repeatedly tried to wake Johnson but were unsuccessful, and elected to break out a rear window, which woke him. Los Angeles County Fire paramedics were called to examine Johnson, who was subsequently arrested for DUI. He was then transported, booked, held for detoxification, and later released with a citation to appear in court.

The executor of a deceased person’s estate called police at 3:17 p.m. to report a car belonging to the estate had been stolen from the 700 block of west 11th Street. Police reported the vehicle’s title appeared to have been fraudulently changed to show the suspect as the owner. The car was later located in Rancho Cucamonga and the driver, Chyvonne Anchondo, 43, from Norco, was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle. She was transported to the CPD jail where she was booked and released pending further investigation.

Claremont police, Claremont Colleges campus safety, and Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded to an 8 p.m. injury collision on Sixth Street at Amherst Avenue. A witness posted on social media that the car had been moving at a high rate of speed before leaving the roadway, crashing into a tree, and bursting into flames. First responders were on the scene within minutes according to the witness. Paramedics performed life saving measures on a passenger who died at the scene, according to police. The driver reportedly suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. Police said an investigation is ongoing and did not provide further details.

 

Friday, June 16
Officers on patrol at 8:24 p.m. in the 100 block of S. Indian Hill Boulevard pulled over Azusa resident Daniel Phillips, 19, for an equipment violation. After questioning him they suspected he might be under the influence of drugs. Phillips allegedly failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for DUI. He was taken to the Claremont jail where he reportedly provided a chemical sample, was booked and held for detoxification. He was later released with a citation to appear in court.

 

Sunday, June 18
At 11:17 a.m. police responded to the 500 block of Scripps Drive regarding two people arguing in a car. Officers questioned a male and female who said they were in a dating relationship. The woman reported that during the argument the man had thrown an object at her, causing a bloody nose. Police arrested the 18-year-old Claremont man for felony domestic violence. He was transported to the Claremont jail where he was booked and held before posting bond.
