Police Blotter – June 4th Edition
Wednesday, May 26
At 3:43 p.m., the Claremont Police Department was contacted by Pomona PD with a request to assist with a situation unfolding near the cities’ border near Arrow Hwy. and Towne Ave. Witnesses said a man was being chased by another man, who was wielding a crowbar, at 730 W. Arrow Hwy. On the scene, Claremont police found one of the suspects, Roman Vital Mayo, 37, from Chino, “agitated and yelling,” and detained him. It was unclear whether he was the pursuer or the one being chased, police said. Regardless, he showed signs of being under the influence of a central nervous system stimulant they believed to be methamphetamine. Mr. Mayo underwent a field sobriety test, and was subsequently arrested on a misdemeanor charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance. Police are awaiting the results of a toxicology test before they modify the charge to include the specific narcotic. Mr. Mayo spent the evening sobering up in Claremont jail before being released to appear in court.

The 31-year-old unhoused man (incorrectly listed as 32 last week) who was arrested twice last week—on May 20 for felony burglary and May 25 for misdemeanor possession of stolen property—was at it again, getting picked up twice this week as well. This week’s flourish began at 6:31 p.m., when Claremont police received a call about a car burglary in progress at Denny’s, 820 S. Indian Hill Blvd. Arriving officers found the man nearby, at Indian Hill Blvd. just south of American Ave. They say he was in possession of the stolen property from the victim’s car, and also had a hypodermic needle in his pocket. The car owner’s property was returned, and he said he didn’t want prosecution, so again the 31-year-old unhoused man was arrested, this time for misdemeanor possession of unlawful drug paraphernalia.
Sunday, May 30
Claremont police pulled over a green 1999 Infiniti G20 driven by 25-year-old Los Angeles resident Jessie Lopez, for a traffic violation near Mountain and San Jose avenues at 11:38 p.m. A search allegedly turned up a replica 1911 Colt-style pistol that had been modified by removing the orange tip, which is used to signify a fake weapon. Police also say they found hypodermic needles and a bag of white powdery substance they believed to be methamphetamine. Mr. Lopez was arrested on three misdemeanor charges of changing or removing markings on a replica gun, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance. Police are awaiting lab results before modifying the charge to include the specific substance.

A man in the 100 block of south Indian Hill Blvd. had a surprise visitor at 9:58 a.m. when an apparently intoxicated 35-year-old Andrea Campos walked into his apartment, unsure where she was. The man called Claremont PD, and arriving officers determined the confused Ontario woman was indeed high. They placed her under arrest for the misdemeanor charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance. Back at headquarters she was booked and allowed her to spend the day sobering up before being released with a citation to appear in Pomona court.

The prolific 31-year-old unhoused man, arrested twice last week and again May 29 for misdemeanor possession of unlawful drug paraphernalia after burglarizing a car, spent the night and early morning in jail again after Claremont police picked him up once again. This time they received a 7:40 p.m. call regarding another car burglary in progress in the 600 block of south Indian Hill Blvd. Arriving officers found the man sitting inside the victim’s car. A search allegedly turned up a syringe and a white powder police believed to be methamphetamine. He was arrested and charged again with misdemeanor possession of unlawful paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance. Police sent a sample off to the lab for identification. After detox, the man was once again set free with another citation to appear in Pomona court.
