Police blotter 12-21-18

Tuesday, December 11

Around $3,000 worth of property was taken from a home on the 1700 block of Oxford Avenue. Between 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., the two suspects entered through an unlocked rear door and took the property, which included jewelry, credit cards and paperwork, Lt. Jason Walters of the Claremont Police Department said. The two men fled in a black Infiniti sedan. Anyone with information should call the Claremont Police Department at (909) 399-5411.

Wednesday, December 12

A patron at BC Café lost his wallet at the restaurant around 1 p.m., Lt. Walters said. Shortly thereafter, an unknown person who found the wallet used its credit cards at the nearby Shell gas station and at another location in Ontario. About $300 was taken from the victim’s account before it was frozen. Police are investigating.

Police received a call about a “suspicious subject” on the 500 block of north Towne Avenue around 1:40 p.m. When they arrived, they found 58-year-old Carlos Benavidez was in possession of an unknown amount of heroin, and had a warrant for his arrest out of La Verne. He was arrested, cited for the heroin and held for the La Verne warrant.

A woman was arrested for being under the influence after she allegedly tried to steal a candy bar from Lost Levels. Police were called to the Packing House arcade around 9:45 p.m. after an employee caught and held 41-year-old Amanda Gutierrez, Lt. Walters said. The shop declined to prosecute Ms. Gutierrez for shoplifting, but police determined she was under the influence of an unknown substance and was arrested.

Thursday, December 13

A local business in Claremont received a bomb threat demanding cash. VMA Communications received the threat around 11:50 a.m. and called the police, Lt. Walters said. When an officer with a K9 unit canvassed the area, no bombs were found. The threat was one of hundreds sent to businesses around the country, and there is an investigation as to where these threats came from.

Two cars were broken into in the carport of Padua Terrace Apartments. The break-ins occurred between 4 p.m. on December 13 and 6:40 a.m. on December 14. The unknown suspects smashed the windows of two cars parked across from each other, taking property and fleeing undetected. One victim lost an iPod worth $200, and the other lost a laptop, a cell phone and a checkbook totaling $2,300. Police are investigating.

Friday, December 14

Two other cars were broken into around the same time, this time on the 100 block of Cambridge Avenue. Between 6 and 8 a.m., a man was seen breaking into two cars, taking some medical records out of one of them, before fleeing in a silver sedan. Nothing was taken from the second car. He is described as being around 25 years old, five feet, 10 inches tall and 150 pounds wearing a hoodie. Police are investigating.

A Claremont woman was arrested on suspicion of elder abuse after pushing the elderly victim during an argument. Police were called to the home on the 500 block of Geneva around 11:15 a.m. after getting a call of an argument at the location, Lt. Walters said. Police determined the suspect, 37-year-old Dominica Sanbrano, allegedly pushed the 73-year-old female victim to the ground. The victim suffered a laceration to her nose. Ms. Sanbrano was arrested on suspicion of elder abuse and taken to CPD jail.

Saturday, December 15

Allen Perez was arrested once again for being drunk in public. This time, the 45-year-old Pomona resident was found passed out in a grass area in front of Technip on the 500 block of Arrow Highway around 4:20 p.m. Mr. Perez was determined to be “extremely intoxicated” by police, and he was arrested and taken to jail to sober up. Mr. Perez has been arrested over 40 times in Claremont for public intoxication.

Sunday, December 16

Early Sunday morning around 1:49 a.m., Claremont officers were alerted to a burglary alarm at 85 Degrees Bakery and Café at 428 Auto Center Drive, according to a release from the Claremont Police Department. Surveillance footage from the scene showed the suspect shattering the front glass door, entering the business and stealing the cash register drawers. The suspect is described as a man wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with the hood cinched closed, police said. He had a bandanna covering his face, dark pants and white and black tennis shoes. There was no suspect vehicle seen. About $45 was in the stolen register, Lt. Walters said.

Monday, December 17

A Glendale man was arrested after an officer allegedly caught him trying to break into the UPS Store on Indian Hill and Bonita. The officer was on routine patrol around 1:10 a.m. when he saw a man in a hoodie with a handkerchief over his face walk up to the business, Lt. Walters said. Once the officer showed his spotlight on the man, he tried to flee, and was caught after a short foot pursuit. He was later identified as 30-year-old Romulo Maloesparza, and was arrested for attempted burglary, resisting arrest and for possessing burglary tools.
