A 9:25 a.m. 9-1-1 call regarding possible elder abuse was routed to the Claremont Police Department. Officers responded to a residence at 478 S. An employee at Stater Bros., 1055 W. Foothill Blvd., called Claremont police at 9:15 a.m. to report a man was in the process of stealing some razors. Arriving officers found the suspect, 40-year-old Steven Mendez, near the store, allegedly in possession of the purloined razors. The Stater Bros. employee desired prosecution, so the Pomona resident was arrested and charged with misdemeanor shoplifting. A search allegedly turned up a methamphetamine pipe, so the misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia was added. Mr. Mendez was booked and released with a citation to appear in court.

A passerby called police at 5:53 p.m. to report an apparently intoxicated man passed out under a bench at the Metrolink station at 200 W. First St. Officers arrived and found the 33-year-old unhoused man had urinated on himself and was in fact drunk. He was rousted and arrested for misdemeanor public intoxication. A records check also turned up two misdemeanor warrants out of San Bernardino County. Normally, this sad story ends with a drunk person sleeping it off in the Claremont jail and then being released in the morning with a ticket. But this time the man allegedly didn’t take to the plan and became agitated enough to allegedly damage a light fixture in his jail cell. So, after detox the man was released with a ticket for two misdemeanor charges of drunk in public and vandalizing jail property, and another ordering him to answer for the two San Bernardino County warrants.
