Police blotter 4-16-21

Thursday, April 8

The Claremont Police Department received a 4:52 p.m. call from a man concerned about the wellbeing of his brother. The man told police 43-year-old Pomona resident Carlos Barrera was in a hotel room at the Claremont Lodge, 736 S. Indian Hill Blvd., that he had mental health issues,  and that he was concerned he may be using methamphetamine. Cops called the hotel manager, who told them Mr. Barrera had damaged a television and was refusing to leave his room. Police arrived at 4:52 p.m. and arrested Mr. Barrera for vandalism and trespassing, both misdemeanors. He was booked at police headquarters before being released with a citation to appear in Pomona Superior Court. 

Friday, April 9

Claremont police on extra patrol at the parking structure at 470 W. First St. say they noticed two people in a gray Toyota Camry loitering on the top floor at 10:25 p.m., and approached them. “There was a strong odor of cannabis coming from the vehicle, and also we could see cannabis in the vehicle,” police said. The driver, Bryan Lopez, 18, from Pomona, consented to a search of the Camry, and police allegedly found not only weed, but a Ziploc baggie containing “magic” psilocybin mushrooms and a loaded .44 caliber revolver. Mr. Lopez was arrested without incident for felony possession of a firearm while in possession of narcotics, and possession of a loaded firearm in a public place, a misdemeanor. The passenger, also 18 and from Pomona, was not arrested. 

Saturday, April 10

Claremont’s trusty remote license plate reading cameras snagged another car theft suspect, this one involving a white Toyota Camry reported stolen out of Ontario on April 8. Police acting an alert located the car near Indian Hill Blvd. and San Jose Ave. at 1:30 a.m., and pulled it over. The driver, Richard Silva, a 27-year-old Ontario resident, was arrested for car theft and possession of a stolen vehicle, both felonies, and a misdemeanor charge of driving without a license. The passenger, Manual Costa, 20, also from Ontario, got picked up on an outstanding warrant. Both men were booked and released with citations. 

A 61-year-old Glendora man was arrested for being drunk in public at 10:40 p.m. at Aruffo’s, 126 Yale Ave., after he had reportedly been crying and laughing at the location for several hours and had urinated on the bathroom floor. Arriving cops quickly determined the man was drunk, and he was transported to the Claremont jail, where he spent several hours sobering up before being released without charges.  

Sunday, April 11

Police were summoned to the Metrolink station at 200 W. First St. at 3:32 p.m. on a report of a man lying non-responsive on the west side of the platform. Arriving police say they saw 40-year-old Claremont resident Brian Gonzalez passed out, with soiled pants and an empty fifth of vodka by his side. He was arrested for being drunk in public, a misdemeanor, booked, and spent the evening detoxing in the Claremont jail before being released with a citation.
