CHS marching band shines through the rain
Neither wind nor rain stopped the Claremont High School marching band from taking the field during Saturday night’s SCSBOA competition. The included the CHS color guard who threw flags 15 feet in the air.
Neither wind nor rain could keep the Claremont High School marching band from taking the field during Saturday’s Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association event, hosted by the Wolfpack.
A fast-moving storm brought light rain just as CHS prepared for its 7:30 p.m. performance. Undeterred, the musicians pressed ahead, delivering a lively, fast-paced show that appeared largely unaffected by the weather.

Santa Ana High School freshman drummer Carlos Rodriguez tightened his chin strap before taking the field. His school was among 11 bands scheduled to perform before rain ended the event early.

Moving equipment for Glendora High School’s marching band took a coordinated effort, with dozens of instruments and props hauled alongside the musicians in uniform.

Damien High School incorporated giant movie film canisters into its themed performance at the CHS football field Saturday.
The competition also doubled as a fundraiser for the CHS instrumental music program. Sales of food, tickets, and merchandise generated $25,000 to help cover expenses for the year. By the time Claremont performed, the stands were packed with spectators.
“Even with the rain, we did a significant amount of sales. An incredible achievement,” said Keri Caldwell, president of the CHS Music Boosters.
In all, 11 bands were scheduled to perform, though two withdrew because of the wet conditions. Among the schools taking part were Santa Ana, Monrovia, Glendora, and Damien.
