Claremont High School

Boys soccer (8-6-2)

Palomares League runner-up Claremont was shutout, 2-0, at Cathedral February 7 to begin the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs. Updated brackets are at cifss.org.

 

Girls soccer (12-8-3)

CHS lost, 3-1, at Edison in the first round of the CIF-SS Division I playoffs. Brackets are updated at cifss.org.

Girls basketball (19-8)

Palomares League champs Claremont beat Los Altos, 49-40, at home in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2AA postseason tournament on February 8, then fell, 52-41, to Ventura at home in the second round on February 10. Keep up to date with CIF-SS brackets at cifss.org.

Boys (0-5) and girls (0-1) wrestling

Results from the February 3 boys tournament at Ayala and the February 9-10 CIF individual tournament were not made available to the Courier.

Baseball (1-0)

Claremont opened the season with a 2-0 home win over Liberty on Tuesday. Apple Valley came by after press time Thursday. Corona Centennial visits CHS Monday, February 19, before the team heads to Oak Hills Wednesday, February 21. Both games are set for 3 p.m.

Softball (0-1)

The Wolfpack began the year by losing to Don Lugo, 8-4, at home Tuesday. CHS faced Roosevelt after press time Thursday and will battle Upland at 3 p.m. Friday at Greenbelt Park. St. Lucy’s welcomes the Pack Wednesday, February 21, for a 3:30 p.m. contest, ahead of another 3:30 p.m. game at Rancho Cucamonga Friday, February 23.

Boys golf (0-0)

CHS got things going after press time Thursday with a contest at Marshall Canyon Golf Course with Los Osos. The boys travel to Santa Anita Golf Course to face Arcadia and Bonita at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, for a scrimmage.

Boys tennis (0-1)

Claremont started their year Tuesday with a 14-4 home loss to Loyola. A home contest with Santiago Corona followed after press time Thursday. San Dimas hosts CHS at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 20. The team then travels to Beckman for a tournament, with games set for 1 p.m. on February 21-22.

Boys volleyball (0-0)

Claremont heads to Portola for an 8 a.m. tournament Saturday, February 17 to kick off the year. Burroughs hosts the Wolfpack at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, before the team heads to Foothill for a tournament, with games at 3 p.m. Friday, February 23 and 7 a.m. Saturday, February 24.

Swim and dive, boys and girls

Both teams are at Los Osos for a 3:30 p.m. meet Wednesday, February 21. Palomares League relays for boys and girls are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, February 24 at Glendora.

Track and field, boys and girls

Both teams are at Alta Loma Tuesday, March 5, for a 3:30 p.m. meet.

The Webb Schools

Boys soccer (11-9-0)

The San Joaquin League runner-up, Webb, shutout Education First Academy, 4-0, at home on February 2, then won, 3-1, at home against San Gabriel Academy in the first round of the Division 7 CIF-SS playoffs on February 9. They then lost to Covina in the second round Tuesday, 6-0. Updated brackets are at cifss.org.

Girls basketball (15-10)

The team capped the regular season with a 44-30 home win over Palmdale Academy February 2. The Academy League runner-up then hosted Environmental Charter in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 5AA postseason tourney, demolishing them, 52-6. Elsinore then ended the Gauls’ season in the next round, coming away 47-33 victors on Webb’s home court.

Girls water polo (14-9)

Webb lost its third-place matchup with Charter Oak, 11-10, at Edgewood February 1 to finish 5-4 in league play and fourth in the Valle Vista League. The Gauls then sunk Tustin, 9-7, at home in the CIF-SS Division 6 wildcard game February 6, and followed it up with a 20-14 win at Alhambra February 7 in the first round of the postseason tournament. The team’s season ended in the quarterfinal round when Indio handed them an 18-16 home defeat.

Boys (6-5) and girls (1-2-1) wrestling

Results from the February 9-10 CIF individual tournament: The Gauls snagged five wins, but none of the wrestlers moved onto the masters meet. At Great Oak, Ben Mandanski lost his first match, 3-2, came back to win, 15-4, in his second, then lost his third, 6-0, in the boys 132 matchup; Ken Lin also lost his first match, 4-0, but overcame his second round opponent, 10-0, before losing his third contest, 6-2, in the boys 150; Hanbo Xu lost, 2-0, in his first outing, finished strong with a 4-2 win in his second round, but lost 7-0 in the third of the boys 157; Hector Vargas lost, 7-0, against his first and second round opponents in the boys 165; Pui Fong fell, 3-2 and 5-0, in his two matches in the boys 175; Luke Smith won, 2-0, in his first match, but lost, 2-0, the second and third rounds in the boys 190; and Jeremy Efuetgnu lost his first match, 2-0, scored a consolation victory in the second, and was sent home in his third, losing 3-0 in the boys 285. At San Dimas, Alina Li, got pinned twice in the girls 155 division but the score sheet was not made available to the Courier.

 

Baseball (0-0)

Webb began San Joaquin League play after press time Thursday with a home matchup against Fairmont Prep. Avalon drops by for a league doubleheader Saturday, February 17, with game times set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Gauls then host Pacifica Christian at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, before going traveling to their diamond for a 3:15 p.m. rematch Friday, February 23.

Softball (0-0)

Webb opens the season with a 3:30 p.m. home contest versus Orangewood Academy Tuesday, February 20, before heading to Avalon Saturday, February 24, for a San Joaquin League doubleheader. Game times are TBD.

 

Boys golf (0-0)

The Gauls start their season by hosting West Covina at San Dimas Canyon Golf Course at 3 p.m. Tuesday, February 27.

Boys tennis (0-0)

Covina hosts the Gauls Friday to start the season. South Hills drops by Webb Tuesday, February 20. The team then visits Glendora Thursday, February 22, Damien Friday, February 23, then welcomes Garey Tuesday, February 27. All games are at 3:15 p.m.

Boys volleyball (0-0)

The season begins at Education First Academy at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, followed by a 4 p.m. home contest with Nova Academy Thursday, February 22. The annual Webb School of California volleyball tournament begins Saturday, February 24 at 8 a.m. against Don Lugo, followed by Damien at 9.

Coed badminton (0-0)

Education First Academy hosts the Gauls at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 24, followed by Fairmont Prep at 3 p.m. Tuesday, February 27.

Swim and dive, boys and girls

The Gauls welcome Chino Thursday, February 22, for a 3:30 p.m. meet.

Track and field, boys and girls

Webb welcomes San Dimas, California High, and Ontario Christian Thursday, February 22 at 2:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, February 24, Arrowhead Christian Academy, Walnut, Ganesha, United Christian Academy, Northview and Westridge stop by at 10 a.m.
