Pomona-Pitzer women win national, regional titles
The Pomona-Pitzer womens water polo team repeated as USA Water Polo Division III National Champions, sinking Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 14-13 in overtime May 7 at Augustana College’s Anne Greve Lund Natatorium in Illinois.
The Sagehens were led by tournament MVP and Pomona College junior utility player Abigail Wiesenthal, who netted six times in the final. Pomona goalkeeper Zosia Amberger stopped 11 shots and had two steals. For a full game recap, visit sagehens.com.
The Sagehens entered the game as the defending champions while the Athenas were in their first women’s Division-III national championship game.
With the win, Pomona-Pitzer capped a marvelous season that saw it take the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference league title, the SCIAC Tournament Championship, and the Division-III national championship.
Lacrosse team repeats as SCIAC tourney winners
The Pomona-Pitzer womens lacrosse team claimed its second-straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship May 6, defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 13-12, at the South Athletic Complex in Claremont.
Pitzer senior midfielder Carly Sullivan was awarded the tournament’s most valuable player award. Pomona sophomore attacker Fiona Lewis had five goals, and one assist. Pitzer senior attacker Grace Warner recorded three goals and two assists. For a full game recap, go to sagehens.com.
This year’s title is Pomona-Pitzer fourth, having previously won in 2015, 2016, and 2022. The team finished league play in first with a perfect 12-0 record.
With the May 6 victory the Sagehens qualified for the 2023 NCAA Division-III women’s lacrosse tournament, where they continued winning, dispatching George Fox, 24-7, to advance to the third round game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kenyon College in Ohio.
Golfers earns second straight conference championship
The Pomona-Pitzer womens golf team successfully defended its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference league title against Redlands April 25 at the Olivas Golf Course in Ventura. The Sagehens came from behind on the final day of the championships to earn the trophy by a stroke.
Pomona junior Katelyn Vo, who took second place, and Pomona freshman Jessica Mason, third, finished inside the top five and helped the team to its second SCIAC championship in program history. For a full game recap, visit sagehens.com.
The win secured the Sagehens bid to the NCAA National Championships, held May 9 to May 12 in Florida. On May 12, Pomona-Pitzer announced the team finished seventh overall at the tournament. A recap is at sagehens.com.
