Pomona soph earns public service scholarship

Pomona College sophomore Sara Garza Gonzalez has been named a recipient of a $15,000 scholarship from the Donald A. Strauss Scholarship Foundation. The annual award is given to California college sophomores and juniors to fund public service-based projects set to be carried out the following year.

Garza Gonzalez’s project will build upon educational programs established in 2019 in Panama between the organization Grandes Sueños (Big Dreams) and the indigenous Kuna community. The undergrad will create a curriculum to educate parents and youth about money, stress, anxiety, and socio-emotional management skills.

The Strauss scholarship, named after the late Donald Strauss of Newport Beach, was established in 1997 by the late Dorothy Strauss, Donald’s widow. This year’s group of recipients is the 27th cohort.
