El Roble Intermediate School was named a 2026 California Distinguished School by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond on March 10.

El Roble joins 407 California middle schools and high schools in the honor, which is valid for two years. Eligibility is determined through a number of statewide standards and data from the 2025 California School Dashboard, including academic performance, progress, assessment participation and school climate indicators.

“We are incredibly honored to be recognized as a California Distinguished School,” wrote El Roble Principal Melissa Samson in a statement. “This recognition speaks to the positive school culture we have built together at El Roble. Our campus is a place where students are encouraged to grow academically, build meaningful connections, and feel a strong sense of belonging. We are proud of the caring and supportive community our staff, students, and families have created together.”

CUSD Superintendent Jim Elsasser also issued a statement: “This recognition is a tremendous honor for El Roble Intermediate School and a reflection of the outstanding work happening on campus every day,” he wrote. “We are incredibly proud of our students, staff, and families whose dedication, perseverance, and commitment to excellence make achievements like this possible. El Roble’s success reflects the strength of our entire school community and our shared focus on supporting every student.”
